About Recipe

Aviyal is a popular item and ideal to have with rice or other accompaniments. A perfect combination of curd and grated coconut, aviyal can be one of your favorite items. It is an essential item of sadya. It’s said that aviyal was invented by Bhima (a mythological character in the epic Mahabharata) during his exile period.

  • 2 carrots chopped,
  • ½ ash gourd deskinned, chopped,
  • 4 drumsticks scaled,
  • ½ cup pumpkin chopped,
  • 2 plantains deskinned, chopped,
  • ½ cup of snake beans,
  • ½ cup of gherkins,
  • ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder,
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds,
  • 4 red chilies ,
  • ½ cup of battered curd,
  • 1 stream of curry leaves,
  • ½ cup of grated coconut,
  • Coconut oil for cooking,
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds,
  • 4 green chilies,
  • 1 teaspoon of salt.


  1. Chop all the vegetables and then boil inside a container with salt and turmeric powder. Do not rinse the water.
  2. Grind together grated coconut, cumin seeds and green chilies.
  3. Add the grinded content to the boiled vegetables. Add battered curd and then mix stir well.
  4. For tempering add mustard seeds and red chilies to coconut oil. Add with the vegetable.
  5. Cook the entire content under low flame. The content should be thickened.
Serve this with rice.
